Fisheye cameras are cameras that have an ultra-wide-angle lens. They have the ability to capture footage of very large spaces in comparison to regular bullet or dome cameras. Fisheye have a 180° or 360° degree range of vision, depending on the camera. When using a wide-angle panoramic IP camera like the Fisheye, warping occurs which gives the effect of a fish’s eye, and so the camera is named.
This type of camera really allows you to see what is going on in the environment it is recording, giving a great overview and showing the full picture.
Most cameras come with anti-warping features so as to take the ice off the warping slightly, like edge dewarping, software dewarping and multiple dewarping display mode. This enables a better view of the recording for analysis post recording.
Fisheye are generally mounted on the roof or ceiling, so as to be positioned to capture the full view. They are used in stadiums, schools, sports complexes, airports, shopping malls and other areas that are large and need surveillance for security purposes.
Fisheye lenses were first used in astronomy as they could capture the entire sky. The warping effectively distorts the image, so the fisheye is popular amongst artists and photographers who want this effect for expression in their artworks. They are also used to capture cityscapes and panoramas.
