Protecting Polyclinics in New Delhi

Polyclinics are ‘super clinics’ set up by a group of doctors and specialists themselves where patients can go to seek medical care, pathology tests and have minor procedures. They are not fully functioning hospitals, but provide a wider range of services than regular clinics.  The concept was initially developed in Russia in the 80’s and the concept has spread worldwide, including to the US, England and India. The concept of Mohalla Clinics in India originated from these types of clinics and started with smaller, mobile clinics in the union territory of New Delhi in India in 2015. Mohalla in Hindi means neighborhood or community. Impulse installed security systems in these clinics in New Delhi to protect the medical supplies and patient records, specifically at night when the premises are unoccupied. The government plans to roll out Mohalla clinics throughout the country.

The healthcare system in India is vast and well-run, even attracting medical tourists due to the private sector, but there is a large gap between urban and rural healthcare, as well as between the less well-off communities and the wealthy. This is where Polyclinics have become worth their weight in gold, distributing services to all communities and ensuring where hospitals are inaccessible, care is still available.

It is the responsibility of each state to provide healthcare services to the population, the central government only deals with administration of the system.  Health Insurance is available to cover private care in the case of the private healthcare system, which is world-class.

Mohalla Clinics are situated primarily in poorer communities and slums.  They have solved the problem of having to travel far distances to access care, which is expensive and difficult for the local population. Healthcare workers also find themselves working in counselling roles and aim to uplift the local communities with guidance and advice on issues like gender-based violence. Mohalla Clinics are community centers which truly and holistically assist the local population and are tremendously popular amongst the communities they serve. These clinics are cost-effective and easy to manage, so have proved a great solution for both sides of the coin.

Impulse is overjoyed that the government has implemented the roll-out of these much needed clinics.  Healthcare is a basic right and should be accessible to all, thanks to Mohalla clinics we are one step closer to this goal.

Mohalla Clinics have also provided relief to the hospital system, as many ailments are treated locally and hospitalisation is not necessary, shortening ques and freeing up beds. Medications are given out free of charge which provides great relief to the pockets of slum dwellers.  Exteriors of the clinics are colourful, brightening up the neighbourhood and cheering up those feeling unwell.  They are well-equipped and are air-conditioned so comfortable, with TV’s in the waiting areas. They are mostly built on government provided land and generally assist 100-150 people per day.
